When the pandas are gone

The world keeps on changing.

When the pandas are gone

When the child is asked in class

‘What is your favourite animal?’

What do you think they will say?

When all the animals are gone

When all the trees have been chopped down

And burned in the furnaces of dollar and yen

Or kept as rare items for the mahogany elite

When all the animals are gone

When we can’t eat fish anymore

After we poisoned their water

With our rush for chemical nirvana

When all the animals are gone

When we tell others that they must get rid

Of their sacred creatures because

We’ve let their toxic farts damage the sky for meat

When all the animals are gone

When silence in the countryside

Isn’t golden anymore

But an absence of life

When all the animals are gone

Who will we dream is holding us at night?

When no one knows what teddy bears are

When a panda cuddle can no longer be imagined

When all the animals are gone

Maybe it’s that child who will save our sloths

Sure, they’re not going to save themselves

But then something tells me we weren’t supposed

To chase them out of house and home

When they’re gone.

They’re gone.

Sloth out
